COMMUNITY PRACTICES

Workplaces

  • Workplaces should have babies-to-work policies to facilitate breastfeeding and responsiveness. When well nurtured, babies will be quiet (unless traumatized), so the success of this effort will require parenting education for all ages.
  • Workplaces should provide high quality child care centers (that provide the evolved nest) so that mothers can breastfeed and a parent can be available for other needs.

Child care centers can provide the evolved nest

  • Educate caregivers about the importance of the evolved nest
  • Ensure that caregivers stay with the same children over several years.
  • Encourage bonding with a teacher and support that relationship over years.
  • Support the provision of breast milk feeding for the first few years.
  • Find ways (e.g. regular carrying) positive touch for each child in care
  • Provide regular of cross-age pairings with elementary, adolescent and elderly partners.
  • Enhance nature connection by providing naturalistic play areas with natural entities like waterways, old trees, hills, and so forth
  • Avoid plastics, which can disrupt endocrine systems
  • Provide experiences that develop playfulness and creativity in response to social and natural experience
  • Avoid focusing on cognitive development until a particular child asks for particular skill development (e.g., reading).
  • Provide a quiet, supportive environment where children follow their impulses to learn
